Kerala: 1901-2002

Kerala 1901-2002 is a meteorological history of Kerala mediated through a software that navigates through a public database of meteorology data. The work was done in collaboration with Dr. Vishal Mehta an environmental scientist at the Stockholm Environmental Institute in Davis.A software program traverses through this database and converts the values into sonic frequencies and displays statistical data visually..These databases occupy a strange mediatory space with respect to our relationship with the physical environment-they are imprints of memories of our past which we choose to either ignore or tuck away in hard drives and servers that are only now being made accessible to the public.Kerala: 1901-2002 is an attempt at making these streams of data more experiential.
Within the traditional musical notion of rhythm, these streams of data have a special significance because of the cyclical aspects of the Indian monsoons.
